The best time of year to undertake a full repair of your lawn is early Autumn.  You need dry days and wet days, preferably in that order!  The first task is to treat the lawn with a specific plant protection product that will treat common lawn weeds.  We use systemic products ensuring the weeds are killed from the root up.  Using systemic treatments we can spray without too finer mist preventing drift and contaminating beds. Next step is to treat for moss which is a constant problem especially with lawns that have tree cover or north facing with slopes resulting in poor light in winter. 

 

Once the treatments have taken effect, the lawn is scarified.  This not only removes the dead weeds and moss, it removes thatch which builds up over time, starving the grass of nutrients, rhizomes of many weeds compact the soil and root systems of the grass.

Depending when you last aerated the lawn, we recommend once every 2 years, aeration is very important in breaking up impacted soil, allowing water and nutrients into the root system.  The stronger the grass, the less likelihood of weeds taking control. 

 

Next we overseed, applying 30g of seed per metre2 over the whole lawn.  This is when we want it to rain, if not then it's out with the hose and ensuring, the seed is kept moist and once germination takes place, water until the grass takes hold.  We use a mixture of 80% rye and 20% Creeping Red Fescue, which grows, sending our rhizomes so will find bare patches. Each blade is one plant which typically grows 10-16 blades

Finally we treat the lawn with an Autumn feed initially which is an NPK fertiliser with essential trace elements.
